STRYCHNINE HYDROCHLORIDE

Description                              Colourlessprismatic crystals or a white crystalline

Powder; tastesintensely bitter.

Identification                          1.  To 0.1g add 3ml of H₂SO₄containing 1% W/V

of Ammonium vanadate; a deepviolet Colour is produced, which changes to deep purple. Dilute with water; theColour changes to cherry-red and persists for some time.

2.      Dissolve a small fragment in2 or 3 drops of

H₂SO₄on a white porcelain plate, and pass a small crystal of K₂Cr₂O₇slowly through the solution; an intense violet Colour is produced, whichchanges through red to yellow.

3.      It gives the reactionscharacteristic of chlorides.

Acidity                                    0.2 gm dissolved in 10 ml ofCarbon dioxide free Water, requires for neutralization notmore than 0.2 ml of O.N/50 NaOH using Methyl red as indicator.

Sulphate                                  0.25gm complies with the limit test for Sulphate.

Brucine                                    To 0.1 gmadd 1 ml of mixture of equal volume of

HNO₃and water. No red or reddish Colour is produced.

Loss of drying                         7.0to 9.0%

Sulphated Ash                                    Notmore than 0.1%

Assay                                      Notless than 97.5% (Calculated on dried basis)
